STATUS OF FOREST COVER

Based on interpretation of satellite data pertaining to Oct-Dec 2015 the forest cover of the state is 12,489 Sq.km which is 75.33% of the State's geographical area. In terms of forest canopy density classes, the State has 1,279 Sq.km area under very dense forest, 4,587 Sq.km are under moderately dense forest and 6,623 Sq.km under open forest.

Zunheboto has 934 Sq. km under forest cover, which is 74.42% of its geographical area. It has 84 Sq.km under very dense forest, 369 Sq.km under moderately dense forest and 481 Sq.km under open forest.

Comparison with the previous assessment showed a loss of 38 Sq.km of forest cover in Zunheboto division. Nagaland as a whole showed a loss of 450 Sq. km of forest cover. The main reasons for the decrease in forest cover are Shifting Cultivation and other biotic pressure on forest lands.
